Save the date for Friday, March 20, 2026, for Edu-Futuro’s 28th Anniversary Gala! We cordially invite you to join us for a night of unity as we gather with friends to recognize the courage, resilience, and determination of the nearly 5,000 students and parents we are privileged to serve each year throughout Northern Virginia. The highlights of the Anniversary Gala have always been the inspiring testimonies shared by youth from our Emerging Leaders Program, and by Edu-Futuro parents who have overcome the many challenges facing our community in order to improve the lives of their families.
We will also honor the education leaders, corporate partners, donors, and volunteers who share our commitment to breaking the cycle of poverty through the power of education. Like last year, the Gala will be held at the Falls Church Marriott Fairview Park, from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. After the main program, live music will take over, and guests will have the opportunity to dance until midnight.
The Anniversary Gala brings together some of Edu-Futuro’s strongest partners, including funders, elected officials, and administrators representing our local school systems. The evening is also one of our most important fundraising events of the year, generating much-needed support for our student and parent programs. There are several ways for you to contribute to Edu-Futuro through the Gala:
- Reserve a table -- bring your network!
- Purchase a ticket -- bring a friend!
- Participate in the silent auction
In addition to purchasing tickets to the Gala, you can also support Edu-Futuro by purchasing space in our event program to promote your organization, or by generously submitting a 100-character message celebrating Edu-Futuro’s mission. Finally, if you would like to become a Gala sponsor, or know of an organization that might like to become a contributor, please email our Director of Development, Zachary Hoskins, at directorofdevelopment@edu-futuro.org.

GED Students Demonstrate Commitment and Success
For the 106 adults currently enrolled in Edu-Futuro’s GED Certification Program, the year-long course offers much more than the opportunity to earn the equivalent of a high school diploma. Over the course of their year with Edu-Futuro, our participants gain confidence, expand their career opportunities, and lay the foundation for greater economic stability for themselves and for their families.
“I truly believe that life is like a mathematical equation, and in the GED program, this applies perfectly,” said Mildrek Bastidas, GED Instructor and Workforce Development Specialist. “We add knowledge, subtract problems, and multiply opportunities. This happens session after session as GED students consistently demonstrate an unwavering commitment to their academic goals.”
The academic and personal growth demonstrated by our students throughout the length of the program highlights the transformative power of educational opportunity and sustained personal commitment. We are very proud to shine a light on the extraordinary efforts of two students who have shown relentless dedication by completing all four modules of our GED Certification Program.
Zulma Guevara -- “My biggest challenge was balancing my family and my work. Both demanded my time while I was trying to attend my classes. The time I dedicated to my studies felt chaotic. Today, my family tells me they are proud because I made it, and that strengthens me to keep going and prove that ‘where there’s a will, there’s a way."
“I feel proud to have overcome the adversities that crossed my path and to have successfully finished my GED. My goal is to continue my academic preparation in Social Work.
“Finishing my GED is a challenge that inspires both me and my children to keep moving forward and not get stuck in life. There is no specific age, language, or perfect time to study; it is all in the mind. Improvement is difficult, but not impossible. Thank you, teacher Mildrek, for inspiring all your students, and thank you to Edu-Futuro for supporting the advancement of the Hispanic community.”
Nancy González -- “My biggest challenge was passing the math exam on my second attempt. I feel proud to have overcome this challenge, and my greatest achievement was finishing my studies after having left them behind many years ago. This diploma completely changes my professional and academic goals because I can now pursue advanced studies without having to revalidate previous coursework.
I consider obtaining my GED an investment because I believe education adds value to every person’s professional life. Be consistent in what you set out to do. I also believe that one must close cycles in order to keep moving forward in life.”

AmeriCorps Members Mark MLK Day Through Community Service in Arlington
On Monday, January 19, 2026, Edu-Futuro AmeriCorps members proudly joined more than 1,500 community volunteers to participate in Volunteer Arlington’s 9th Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service. Honoring Dr. King’s vision of a “beloved community,” the day transformed Arlington’s Washington-Liberty High School into a vibrant hub of service, collaboration, and civic engagement.
Throughout the day of service, families, students, Youth Mental Health Corps members from Northern Virginia and George Mason University, and community partners came together to support a wide range of projects. Edu-Futuro AmeriCorps members were proud to take part in this countywide effort honoring Dr. King’s legacy through meaningful, hands-on service, reinforcing our organization’s ongoing commitment to leadership, civic engagement, and community impact. Each year, our AmeriCorps members participate in both the MLK Day of Service and the 9/11 Day of Service as part of their dedication to strengthening the communities we serve.
One of the largest and most impactful projects of the day was “MLK Day: Become a Hunger Hero!” Coordinated by Volunteer Arlington in partnership with the Replenish Foundation, this initiative addressed food insecurity -- an issue affecting an estimated 23% of Arlington County households. More than 350 volunteers, including Edu-Futuro AmeriCorps members, worked side by side in an assembly-line effort to package up to 10,000 shelf-stable meals for families in need.
“Serving on MLK Day reminded me that real change happens when we show up for our community,” said Joy Harvey, Edu-Futuro’s AmeriCorps Programs Coordinator. “Packing meals as a Hunger Hero wasn’t just about fighting hunger -- it was about honoring Dr. King’s legacy through action and standing in solidarity with families who need support. I’m proud to serve alongside Edu-Futuro and AmeriCorps members on a day that truly lives up to the idea of a ‘day on, not a day off.’”
“It was a deeply moving morning,” added Danielle Johnson, AmeriCorps Curriculum Design VISTA. “Seeing so many people eager to make a difference was inspiring. My favorite moment was speaking with an elementary school student who shared about his school life while helping package beans. Watching civic engagement begin at such a young age speaks volumes about the strength and awareness of our community.”
Looking ahead, Edu-Futuro remains committed to expanding opportunities for service and civic engagement that empower our members and uplift our communities. Edu-Futuro Volunteer Spotlight: Mary Kazarian
In order to meet the needs of our community, Edu-Futuro staff depend on the invaluable partnership and support of generous volunteers who offer their time, knowledge, and lived experience to serve our families, and strengthen the long-term sustainability of Edu-Futuro’s work.
“We could not achieve the impact we have in our communities without the unconditional support of our professional volunteers,” said Mariana Balgurevich, Edu-Futuro’s Volunteer Coordinator. “In a world that often feels chaotic, these professionals look for meaningful, immediate ways to make a difference -- and they choose to do their part through service with Edu-Futuro. We are profoundly grateful to have them support our mission and the communities we serve.”
This is our space to recognize the essential contributions of volunteers who dedicate their time and expertise for the benefit of others. Today, we highlight the outstanding work of Edu-Futuro volunteer, Mary Kazarian:
“I was searching for an opportunity to branch out and lean into my love of learning and people, so I decided to search Arlington County’s Volunteer Database for a local organization I could support. I came across Edu-Futuro’s volunteer opportunity and immediately connected with its mission and needs. I also knew this would be an opportunity to grow, strengthen my facilitation skills, and support an organization making a tangible impact right here in my own community.
“The most meaningful part of this experience was seeing how dedicated every Edu-Futuro team member is to their individual work and to the overall mission. I also saw how open and engaged this group was, and it was energizing. There was laughter, there were tears, and ultimately there was a willingness to learn more about themselves and commit to growth.
“Volunteering aligns with my values of living authentically, curiosity, and playfulness. I strive to embody those qualities always, and though I fall short at times, I am reminded through my workshops with Edu-Futuro that we are all human -- that we do the best we can until we know better, and then we do better. The head nods around the room and the openness of this group to share and ask questions reminded me why I signed up to volunteer: we all care deeply about our community and want to see one another thrive.
“If a volunteer opportunity opens with Edu-Futuro, please sign up. You will see that this group’s passion for their work extends to everyone they encounter. You may even find yourself wondering, ‘Should I apply to work here permanently?’ The mission is vital, but more than that, the people who carry out Edu-Futuro’s mission are the kind of people I aspire to be -- kind, caring, empathetic, and truly committed to helping those who need it most.”
Edu-Futuro’s Volunteer Program offers opportunities with a variety of time commitments throughout the year. For more information on our upcoming volunteer opportunities please contact Edu-Futuro’s Volunteer Coordinator, Mariana Balgurevich, at volunteer@edu-futuro.org.
AmeriCorps/VISTA Corner: John Huntoon
Edu-Futuro’s impact is made possible through the invaluable help of both AmeriCorps State and AmeriCorps VISTA members. Our cohort of AmeriCorps State members play a critical role in the lives of our students and parents by serving as facilitators in the Emerging Leaders Program (ELP) and Workforce Development Services (WDS). Meanwhile, our AmeriCorps VISTA members work in a variety of key capacity building projects, including the updating of our beneficiary database and development of brand-new curricula for students and parents. This is our corner to highlight the great work being done by Edu-Futuro’s AmeriCorps members and VISTAS. Today we feature AmeriCorps State and National member, John Huntoon:
"I enjoy helping others and being involved in my community. I have some experience working with students and families from different backgrounds, which has helped me learn how to communicate and be patient. I decided to work with Edu-Futuro and AmeriCorps because I care about education and helping students succeed. This program gives me the chance to make a positive difference.
“In my position, I help support students and families through educational programs and activities. The people I mainly work with are students and families in the community, especially those who need extra support. I help by sharing resources, helping with activities, and offering encouragement. A positive thing I see is students becoming more confident and motivated. It feels good to know my work helps them move forward.
“This position means a lot to me because I get to help others while gaining experience. It makes me feel proud to give back to my community. I enjoy knowing that even small efforts can make a difference. This role has helped me grow and learn more about what it means to serve a community.”

Financial Tip
Protect Your Family from FAFSA and Financial Aid Scams
For many immigrant, Latino, and other disadvantaged families, completing the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) represents hope, opportunity, and the promise of college access. Unfortunately, the financial aid process has become a target for scammers seeking to exploit confusion, and urgency. At Edu-Futuro, families should remember one essential fact: FAFSA is always free to complete, and no one should ever charge a fee to submit the application.
What the Research Shows
Fraud and abuse in federal student aid programs have surged in recent years. The U.S. Department of Education identified nearly 150,000 suspect identities in FAFSA applications in 2025 alone, prompting enhanced identity verification measures. In addition, investigations at colleges nationwide have revealed that in some community college systems, up to one-third of financial aid applications were flagged as potentially fraudulent, resulting in millions of dollars in diverted or delayed aid.
These schemes -- often referred to as “ghost student” scams -- use stolen or synthetic identities to enroll individuals who never intend to attend classes, simply to access federal aid funds. Such activity not only wastes taxpayer resources, but also crowds out genuine students seeking financial assistance. As financial expert Michael Ryan explained in a Newsweek report on student aid fraud: “When ghost students enroll in courses, they take up space in classes with limited capacity, forcing real students onto waitlists or delaying required coursework. Now we're talking about stolen opportunity, not just money.”
Common FAFSA Scams
Scammers use several tactics to obtain personal information or collect unnecessary fees:
“Guaranteed Scholarship” Offers -- No legitimate organization can guarantee federal financial aid or scholarships in exchange for payment.
Fake FAFSA Websites -- The only official FAFSA website is, studentaid.gov. Fraudulent sites often mimic official pages to collect Social Security numbers, tax information, and banking details.
Phishing Emails or Text Messages -- Messages that request verification of personal data through unsolicited links should raise concern. Federal agencies do not request sensitive information through random emails or texts.
Application Processing Fees -- Some companies charge families to “assist” with FAFSA submission. The form itself remains completely free.
Pressure for Immediate Payment -- Scammers create urgency by claiming limited funds or expiring deadlines. Federal student aid does not operate on sudden, same-day demands.
To stay protected, families should:
- Use only studentaid.gov
- Never pay a fee to submit FAFSA
- Keep FAFSA IDs and passwords private
- Verify scholarship offers through school counselors
- Work with trusted nonprofit organizations such as Edu-Futuro
Education should open doors of opportunity, and applying for financial aid should empower families, not create fear. With accurate information and trusted guidance, families can protect personal their private data, and focus on securing a brighter educational future for their children.
Health & Welness
Wellness States Falling Short in Fighting Tobacco Harm
A new national report from the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids and several health partners reveals that most U.S. states are still failing to invest sufficient funding in programs that prevent tobacco use, support quitting, and protect public health -- despite the enormous harm that tobacco causes to families and communities across the country.
The report, titled Broken Promises to Our Children: A State-by-State Look at the 1998 Tobacco Settlement 27 Years Later, examines how states have used revenues from the historic tobacco settlement and tobacco taxes to fund prevention and cessation efforts. The report finds that state funding for tobacco control programs remains far below what health experts recommend, even as tobacco use -- especially among young people -- continues to threaten long-term health.
Tobacco use remains the leading cause of preventable disease and death in the United States, responsible for nearly 500,000 fatalities each year, and costing hundreds of billions of dollars in health care expenses and lost productivity. Even with progress in reducing cigarette smoking, millions of Americans still use tobacco products and millions of young people continue to experiment with nicotine-containing products such as e-cigarettes.
States Are Not Funding Prevention at Recommended Levels
According to the report’s findings for the 2026 fiscal year:
- States will collectively spendjust $728.6 million on tobacco prevention and cessation programs.
- That amount is a decrease from the previous year, and represents only about 22% of the funding recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for all states combined.
- Only one state, Maine, currently funds its tobacco control programs at or above CDC-recommended levels.
- Seventeen states invest less than 10% of recommended funding levels.
- Nine states allocate less than 5% of recommended tobacco prevention funding.
Public health experts have repeatedly warned that low levels of prevention funding have led to greater health burdens, especially for children and adolescents who remain susceptible to marketing and addictive products. Despite the clear evidence that tobacco control programs reduce youth initiation and help adults quit, states continue to underfund these lifesaving efforts.
Tobacco Taxes Could Boost Health and Revenue
The report also highlights how increasing cigarette taxes can yield substantial health and economic benefits. Scientific evidence shows that raising the price of tobacco products reduces consumption -- especially among youth, who are more price sensitive -- and generates new revenue for state health programs. If all states and the District of Columbia increased their cigarette tax by $1.50 per pack, analysts project:
- More than 230,000 children could be prevented from ever starting smoking.
- Nearly 860,000 current adult smokers could quit.
- Over 275,000 premature, smoking-related deaths could be avoided.
- More than$14 billion in long-term health care costs could be saved.
These benefits would come alongside billions of dollars in additional state revenue, funds that can support tobacco prevention, health care, and other community priorities. Despite declines in traditional cigarette smoking, millions of young people continue to use tobacco products, and product innovation continues to challenge public health efforts.
