Edu-Family 2026: Our Community United for Education

01. Newsletter August 2026 - Home Page - Edu-Family 2026 Group Picture

Nearly 500 students, parents, volunteers, educators, and community partners gathered at George Mason University's Fairfax Campus on Saturday, July 18, 2026, for the sixth annual Edu-Family celebration. As Edu-Futuro's largest event of the year, Edu-Family inspires students to pursue college while equipping their parents with practical guidance on budgeting, scholarships, financial aid, and the many resources available to make higher education more affordable and accessible.

"When we launched Edu-Family in the summer of 2021, our hope was to give our families a memorable day of learning, inspiration, and community connection," said Edu-Futuro Executive Director Jorge Figueredo. "The success of this year's event has once again demonstrated what becomes possible when students, parents, educators, and volunteers unite around a shared purpose — empowering families through education."

01. Newsletter August 2026 - Edu-Family Walkinshaw speechOne of the highlights of the day was the participation of U.S. Congressman James Walkinshaw (VA-11th District), who welcomed participants to Edu-Family 2026 during a morning session. "Edu-Futuro has spent more than two decades helping low-income and other underserved families access educational opportunities, develop leadership skills, and build brighter futures for the next generation," said the Congressman. "This year's celebration also recognized an incredible milestone: 79 graduates of Edu-Futuro's Emerging Leaders Program earned nearly $10 million in college scholarships — a testament to their hard work and to the life-changing impact of this program. Thank you to Edu-Futuro, AmeriCorps, and every volunteer and community partner who made this event possible. Investing in students and connecting families with the resources they need strengthens our entire community."

Throughout the day, students took full advantage of Edu-Family's many learning opportunities, exploring career pathways through an engaging Career Panel, meeting with admissions representatives at the College Fair, and participating in educational workshops ranging from Robotics for middle school students to the always-popular College 101 for Students. This year's celebration also featured the debut of the Edu-Futuro Job Fair, connecting participants directly with  employers and organizations such as Legacy Learners, AMR US Commercial Cleaning, Virginia Community Health Workers Association (VACHWA), and Amazon Web Services.

We are especially grateful to the colleges and universities that participated in this year's College Fair, including George Mason University, James Madison University, Marymount University, Northern Virginia Community College, Old Dominion University, Virginia Tech, the University of Virginia, and the College of William & Mary.

"After all the work, planning, and coordination that go into an event like this, seeing nearly 500 participants gathered at George Mason University was incredibly moving," said Edu-Futuro Manager of Programs, Dulce Oliveros. "For me, one of the most special parts was seeing parents, students, and families from diverse communities sharing the same space — learning together, participating in activities, and enjoying a day designed specifically for them. I felt so proud of the entire Edu-Futuro team and everyone who contributed to making this event a reality."

At Edu-Family, parents were at the center of the day's activities just as much as the students. Nearly 200 participants attended sessions such as College 101 for Parents, our new AI for Job Search workshop, and a financial planning and budgeting seminar. "The experience was amazing," said Iram Sikander, a presenter at the financial planning workshop and a Vice President and Financial Inclusion Leader II at Truist Financial Corporation."The Edu-Futuro team was incredibly supportive, and participants were engaged, asked thoughtful questions, and actively participated. Our organization is committed to strengthening communities through education, resources, and community engagement, and this event aligned perfectly with our mission and values."

A special thank you from Edu-Futuro must go to Lauren MacGregor, Assistant Director of College Success and First-Gen Recruitment at George Mason University, for her partnership and dedication throughout the planning process, and to George Mason University for once again generously hosting Edu-Family on its beautiful Fairfax campus.

01. Newsletter August 2026 - Edu-Family lobby"Edu-Family is a reminder that creating opportunities for young people is never the work of one organization alone," said Volunteer Coordinator Mariana Balgurevich. "Every volunteer, presenter, sponsor, community partner, and family who participated helped make this day possible. Together, we created meaningful experiences, opened doors to new possibilities, and reminded hundreds of families that they are not alone on their educational journey. When a community comes together with a shared purpose, education truly changes lives."

The Edu-Futuro Job Fair: Connecting Families to Opportunity

02. Newsletter August 2026 - Edu-Family Job Fair 26One of the most exciting additions to this year's Edu-Family celebration was the debut of the Edu-Futuro Job Fair, a new initiative organized by our Workforce Development Services team to connect students and parents directly with local employers and career opportunities. Held throughout the morning alongside the Edu-Futuro College Fair, the Job Fair attracted a steady stream of participants eager to explore employment options and speak one-on-one with recruiters from four organizations: Legacy Learners, the Virginia Community Health Workers Association (VACHWA), AMR US Commercial Cleaning, and Amazon through its Latinos at Amazon employee resource group.

Legacy Learners introduced participants to career opportunities in early childhood education while highlighting professional development pathways for future educators. VACHWA shared employment opportunities and training for health workers dedicated to improving health outcomes in underserved neighborhoods across Virginia. AMR US showcased career opportunities in commercial facility services, introducing participants to positions in a growing industry while emphasizing the company's commitment to employee development, respect, and long-term career growth. Amazon connected families with employment opportunities at the company, while sharing information about professional development, career advancement, and the company's Latino employee resource group.

Even though this was the inaugural Edu-Futuro Job Fair, the event quickly became a vibrant hub of conversation and opportunity. "Throughout the morning, I saw parents and students enthusiastically visiting every booth, asking thoughtful questions, and making meaningful connections," said Guadalupe Mendoza, Workforce Development Specialist. "Each of our partners shared valuable information about their organizations, employment opportunities, and career pathways, and participants left with flyers, new contacts, and real possibilities for the future. I truly believe this event will have a lasting impact on many of the families we serve."

"The success of our first Job Fair reinforced something we have believed for a long time — families benefit most when they have the opportunity to meet employers face-to-face and build relationships directly with organizations that are hiring," said Edu-Futuro Executive Director Jorge Figueredo. "This is only the beginning. Edu-Futuro is committed to expanding these opportunities by bringing more local businesses, government agencies, and community partners together with our students and parents throughout the year. By combining workforce preparation with direct access to employers, we can help even more families take the next step toward economic mobility."

AI for Everyday Success Celebrates Inaugural Graduation

03. Newsletter August 2026 - AI Grad 2On Thursday, July 23, 2026, Edu-Futuro's Workforce Development Services team celebrated a historic milestone with the inaugural graduation of AI for Everyday Success, our new workshop series introducing participants to practical, everyday applications of artificial intelligence. Held at the Arlington Mill Community Center, the ceremony recognized 25 graduates whose achievements marked not only a personal accomplishment, but also an exciting new chapter in Edu-Futuro's commitment to digital literacy and workforce innovation.

The launch of AI for Everyday Success represented several important firsts for Edu-Futuro: The workshop series is our first dedicated artificial intelligence program, as well as the first Workforce Development initiative offered at a community center during the summer. Unlike our school-based programs, the Edu-Futuro team managed every aspect of the initiative — from participant recruitment and community outreach to curriculum delivery and graduation planning. Community response exceeded expectations, with an average of 28 participants attending each session. To ensure parents could fully participate, Edu-Futuro also provided free childcare for 10 children throughout the program, removing one of the most common barriers to education for working adults.

For many participants, the workshop opened the door to a technology they had never explored before. "Before joining the program, I didn't know AI tools even existed or all the things they could do," shared graduate Doris Vicente. "I learned that artificial intelligence can help us learn, answer questions, organize ideas, and complete tasks more efficiently. Now I know I can use these tools to continue learning, search for information, and save time. My message to future participants is simple: take advantage of this opportunity and don't be afraid to learn something new. I started this program knowing nothing about artificial intelligence, and today I leave with knowledge that I know will benefit me for years to come."

The success of the inaugural cohort reflected the dedication and collaboration of the entire Workforce Development team. "I am incredibly proud of the tremendous effort our team invested in bringing this program to life," said Workforce Development Team Lead Joceline Briceño. "The collaboration among our Workforce Development Specialists, AmeriCorps volunteers, and highly engaged participants made this program a tremendous success. Despite any challenges, watching our students embrace new technology with such enthusiasm reminded us why this work matters and inspires us to continue expanding these opportunities for our community."

"Artificial intelligence is transforming the workplace, and our responsibility is to ensure that the families we serve are prepared to benefit from those changes rather than be left behind," said Edu-Futuro Manager of Programs, Dulce Oliveros. "The graduation of our first AI for Everyday Success class marks the beginning of a long-term commitment to expanding AI literacy, digital skills, and workforce readiness. We look forward to helping many more parents and students gain the confidence and knowledge they need to succeed in an increasingly technology-driven economy."

AmeriCorps Corner: Welcoming Kendi Mwongo - AmeriCorps VISTA Leader

05. Newsletter August 2026 - Kendi headshot Aug 4, 2026Edu-Futuro's impact is made possible through the invaluable support of both AmeriCorps State and AmeriCorps VISTA volunteers. Our cohort of AmeriCorps State volunteers plays a critical role in the lives of our students and parents by serving as facilitators in the Emerging Leaders Program and Workforce Development Services. Meanwhile, our AmeriCorps VISTA volunteers work on a variety of key capacity-building projects, including updating our data management systems and developing brand-new curricula for students and parents. This section highlights the outstanding work being carried out by Edu-Futuro's AmeriCorps volunteers. This month, we are pleased to introduce our new AmeriCorps VISTA Leader, Kendi Mwongo, whose passion for service and previous VISTA experience make for a wonderful addition to the Edu-Futuro team.

"My name is Kendi Mwongo, and I currently serve as the AmeriCorps VISTA Leader at Edu-Futuro. I earned a Bachelor of Science in Information Science and Systems with a concentration in Decision Science. I am a Kenyan American who was born in Virginia and raised in places ranging from Japan to Kenya, where my parents are originally from. Before stepping into this role, I completed a year of AmeriCorps VISTA service with the Virginia Funders Network during 2024–2025, supporting capacity-building initiatives in communities across Virginia. I was drawn to Edu-Futuro because I wanted to use what I learned as a VISTA volunteer to support others as they serve their communities, develop new skills, and grow both personally and professionally. Outside of work, I enjoy baking, cooking, spending time with family and friends, and growing my small business. One of my greatest strengths is connecting with people from different backgrounds and helping them feel welcomed and supported.

"As the VISTA Leader at Edu-Futuro, my role is to ensure that VISTA volunteers feel supported and have everything they need to succeed throughout their service. Much of my work involves checking in with volunteers, connecting them with helpful resources, tracking their progress, and supporting their personal and professional goals. I work closely with VISTA volunteers, my supervisor, Edu-Futuro staff, and program leaders to answer questions and address challenges as they arise. I also hope to be someone volunteers feel comfortable turning to whenever they need guidance, encouragement, or simply someone who understands the VISTA experience. I am especially looking forward to getting to know each volunteer, watching them grow throughout their service, and helping them feel proud of the difference they are making.

"Serving as a VISTA Leader means a great deal to me because I know firsthand what it is like to serve as a VISTA volunteer. I understand that the experience is incredibly rewarding, but it also comes with challenges. That is why I hope to be a mentor, a source of encouragement, and someone volunteers can always rely on for support. Being part of Edu-Futuro gives me the opportunity to support people who are making a meaningful difference in the lives of students, families, and the communities we serve. I hope to bring compassion, organization, creativity, and open communication to this role while continuing to learn and grow alongside the VISTA volunteers I support."

Health & Wellness: New Lawsuit Hopes to Protect Teens from Dangers of Tobacco

06. Newsletter August 2026 - Health - Tobacco

For more than a decade, the United States has made significant progress in reducing youth smoking and use of tobacco products. Yet more than two million young people still utilize tobacco products, with e-cigarettes remaining the most commonly used form of nicotine among middle and high school students. As new products continue to enter the marketplace, pediatricians, parents, and public health organizations remain concerned that many teenagers are being exposed to highly addictive nicotine at an early age.

That concern took on new urgency on July 14, 2026, when a coalition of public health organizations, pediatricians, and parents filed a federal lawsuit challenging a recent U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) enforcement policy involving unauthorized e-cigarettes and nicotine pouches. The lawsuit argues that the policy allows certain products to remain on the market without undergoing the scientific review and marketing authorization required by federal law, including products the FDA has previously identified as posing significant risks to youth.

According to the lawsuit: “The Guidance permits potentially thousands of tobacco products to enter and remain on the market for an indefinite period of time without the [marketing granted order] required by the Tobacco Control Act. The products affected are the two tobacco products most commonly used by youth, e-cigarettes and nicotine pouches, including in flavors that undeniably appeal to youth.”

The case is not about whether adults who smoke should have access to alternatives that may reduce harm. Rather, the central question is whether products that have not completed the FDA's required scientific review should remain widely available while that review is pending. Public health groups argue that weakening enforcement increases the likelihood that products with flavors, attractive packaging, or other youth-oriented features will reach adolescents before their safety and public health impact have been fully evaluated.

The FDA has explained that its updated enforcement priorities are intended to focus resources on products considered most appealing to young people, such as those designed to resemble toys or featuring other youth-targeted characteristics. Agency officials have stated that the new approach is designed to encourage an orderly transition toward a more regulated marketplace. Supporters of the policy also argue that stronger oversight, rather than broad product removal, may ultimately improve compliance.

Regardless of how the courts resolve this dispute, families can take several practical steps to protect young people. Parents should remember that many e-cigarettes and nicotine pouches contain substantial amounts of nicotine, a drug that can affect the developing adolescent brain and lead to addiction. Products marketed with fruit flavors, colorful packaging, or discreet designs may appear harmless, but they are not risk-free. Open conversations about nicotine, peer pressure, advertising, and social media can help teenagers recognize marketing tactics and make healthier decisions.

Parents should also be aware that nicotine pouches are becoming increasingly common. Unlike cigarettes or many vaping products, these small pouches are placed between the lip and gum, making them easy to conceal at school or at home. Their discreet appearance can make them difficult for adults to recognize, creating another reason to maintain ongoing communication with children and adolescents about nicotine use.

At Edu-Futuro, we believe that prevention begins with education. By helping parents stay informed about emerging tobacco products and encouraging honest conversations at home, families can play a powerful role in protecting young people from nicotine addiction. While public policy debates continue, one goal remains shared by parents, educators, health professionals, and community organizations alike: ensuring that every young person has the opportunity to grow up healthy and free from nicotine dependence.

Edu-Futuro’s Strengthening Families 10-14 Program, which helps teens to reduce such risky behaviors as tobacco use and vaping, is sponsored in part by a generous grant from the Virginia Foundation for Healthy Youth (VFHY), empowering Virginia's youth to make healthy choices by promoting active, nutritious and tobacco-free living.
